Category:Betamax devices

Betamax devices includes all AV equipment in the Betamax format family: Betamax, SuperBeta, and ED Beta.

Betamax Format Variants

  • Betamax — Consumer format introduced by Sony in 1975, predecessor to VHS
  • SuperBeta — Enhanced Betamax with improved horizontal resolution (~290 lines vs ~250 lines)
  • ED Beta (Extended Definition Beta) — High-bandwidth variant with ~500 lines resolution, the highest quality consumer analog tape format

Notes

Betamax lost the "format war" to VHS in the consumer market despite superior picture quality, primarily due to shorter recording times and higher costs. However, the professional derivative Betacam became an industry standard in broadcast television.
