Description
The Sanyo VTC 5000 was described by Sanyo as a "Betacord" rather than Betamax, since only Sony licensed the Betamax trademark. A top-loading machine that was remarkably light at only 8kg (compared to 15.5kg for the contemporary Sony SL-C7) thanks to its all-plastic chassis. It incorporated power-saving ICs consuming only 29W and reduced mechanical solenoids to zero — the loading motor carried out all mechanical operations. A unique feature was that it unthreaded the tape from the heads and returned it into the cassette shell before performing winding operations. The VTC 5000 was the first VCR to sell for under £300 in the UK and became Britain's best-selling VCR of 1982. Also sold as the VTC 5000II and rebadged as the Titan VCR-2000.
