Description

The Sony SL-8000 was the first PAL Betamax VCR, introduced in 1978 for the European market. A top-loading "piano key" design, it was very advanced for its day, though by modern standards it was a basic machine with no cue/review functions. It featured pause (with muted video), a mechanical tape counter, an 8-channel tuner with presets, and a one-event two-day timer. A simple cable remote control provided pause functionality. Toshiba produced a clone called the V-5250, and NEC produced one called the PVC-2300. Regional variants included the SL-8000E (Continental Europe, CCIR B/G tuner) and SL-8000UB (United Kingdom, CCIR I tuner, slightly lighter). The SL-8000 was a PAL-only model with no direct NTSC equivalent; Sony's concurrent NTSC models for the American market were the SL-8200 (1977) and SL-8600 (1978), which were mechanically different designs.
