Time base correctors and frame synchronizers are video signal processing devices used to stabilize and synchronize video signals in professional broadcast and production environments.
Time Base Correctors
Time base correctors (TBCs) were originally designed to fix timing jitter from VTR/VCR tape playback. Early TBCs had limited correction windows, but modern "infinite window" TBCs can store entire frames of video.
Frame Synchronizers
Frame synchronizers lock asynchronous video sources to house sync or genlock reference. By storing at least one full frame in memory, they can integrate external feeds from satellites, remote cameras, or different facilities into a synchronized production environment.
Convergence
Modern devices typically combine both functions, as an infinite window TBC is functionally equivalent to a frame synchronizer. Most contemporary signal processors are marketed as "TBC/Frame Synchronizer" units.
