Description

The Sony PCM-701ES is a digital audio processor that converts analog audio to 16-bit PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) digital format, encoding it as a pseudo-video signal for recording onto standard Betamax (or VHS) tape via any compatible VCR. Released in 1983, it enabled CD-quality digital audio recording and playback through the video signal path of a VCR, and was often paired with the SL-C9 Betamax. The "ES" denotes Sony's premium Elevated Standard line. The PAL version encodes audio as a PAL-format video signal, while an NTSC version existed for the American market. The PCM-701ES was widely adopted by audiophiles and professional recording engineers as an affordable digital recording solution, predating DAT by several years. The build quality was exceptionally good — the electronics rarely fail and units are often still found in full working order today. It is a standalone audio processor, not a VCR, and requires a separate video recorder.
