The Sony KW-32HDF9 was the inaugural model of Sony's WEGA television series, released in 1997. It combined the newly developed FD Trinitron flat-screen technology with DRC (Digital Reality Creation) signal processing for highly advanced picture reproduction.

The "WEGA" name was originally used by Sony in Germany as a product brand. With the KW-32HDF9, Sony adopted WEGA as the global brand name for its premium television line. The name proved successful, and the FD Trinitron WEGA series became the top-selling television model in the United States by 2001, with over 40 million sets sold worldwide by 2003.
