Video8 devices includes all AV equipment in the 8mm video format family: Video8, Hi8, and Digital8.

Video8 Format Variants

• Video8 — Compact 8mm tape format introduced by Sony in 1985, primarily used in camcorders
• Hi8 — Higher resolution variant of Video8 (~400 lines), comparable to S-VHS quality
• Digital8 — Digital video recording on Hi8/Video8 tapes using DV codec, backwards compatible for Hi8/Video8 playback

Notes

The 8mm format family was primarily designed for camcorder use due to its compact cassette size. Desktop VCRs exist but are less common than VHS counterparts. Digital8 provided an affordable entry point to digital video editing while maintaining compatibility with existing analog 8mm tape libraries.
