Description

The Sony SL-8080 was an improved version of the SL-8000, looking almost identical at first glance. Its key advancement was the addition of cue and review functions (with video muted during operation), making it the first domestic VCR to incorporate picture search capabilities. This put Betamax ahead of the rival VHS format at the time. Like its predecessor, it was a PAL-only top-loading "piano key" design for the European market. Regional variants included the SL-8080E (Continental Europe) and SL-8080UB (United Kingdom). There was no direct NTSC equivalent; the contemporary American models were front-loading designs like the SL-5400 and SL-5600.
