Description

The Sony UVW-100 is a Betacam SP one-piece camcorder from the UVW budget series, designed primarily for ENG (Electronic News Gathering) and programme acquisition work. At 7.3 kg fully equipped (including viewfinder, lens, microphone, battery, and cassette), it enables single-person operation in the field.

The UVW-100 incorporates three 1/2-inch Hyper HAD CCD image sensors with an F1.4 prism system, delivering 700 TV lines of horizontal resolution and a signal-to-noise ratio of 60 dB. Clear Scan capability allows shooting computer displays without banding artifacts, with adjustable shutter speeds from 59.9 Hz to 200.3 Hz.

The camcorder records on S-size metal particle Betacam SP cassettes, providing over 30 minutes of recording time. It provides two longitudinal audio channels with Dolby C noise reduction. Audio inputs are via two balanced XLR connectors with selectable 48V phantom power for condenser microphones.

A built-in LTC time code generator/reader conforms to the SMPTE standard and supports real-time/date recording. The camcorder is genlockable to external time code via the BNC genlock input for multi-camera synchronization. The industry-standard 26-pin VTR interface provides component (Y/R-Y/B-Y), Y/C, and composite video outputs simultaneously, allowing direct connection to a second VTR for simultaneous recording or monitoring.

Video outputs include two BNC camera video outputs for monitoring. A 20-pin playback adaptor connector enables color playback with the optional VA-300 playback adapter. An earphone output on a mini stereo jack provides audio monitoring. The compact design incorporates a small drum mechanism for reduced size and weight, and low power consumption of 20W allows over 60 minutes of continuous operation on a single NP-1B battery.

An enhanced version, the UVW-100B, was subsequently released with Power HAD CCD sensors offering dramatically reduced vertical smear (approximately 1/10 that of the UVW-100) and improved sensitivity of F11.0 at 2000 lux.

Supplied accessories include the DXF-601 1.5-inch viewfinder, VCL-714BX 14× zoom lens, LC-421 carrying case, VCT-U14 tripod adaptor, external microphone, and shoulder strap.
