Description

The Sony BVW-40P is the PAL version of the BVW-40, the first Betacam studio edit recorder introduced by Sony in 1984. It accepts only S-size (small) cassettes with a maximum recording time of approximately 20 minutes using BCT-20K tape at the PAL tape speed of 101.5 mm/s.

The BVW-40P uses oxide-formulation tape in the original Betacam format (not Betacam SP). It provides two longitudinal audio channels and supports both composite and component video via BNC and Sony 12-pin DUB connectors. A built-in TBC ensures broadcast-quality output without external processing.

The deck supports built-in machine-to-machine editing via RS-422 serial control, and integrates into larger editing systems via both 9-pin serial and 36-pin parallel interfaces. Though eventually superseded by the Betacam SP edit recorders (BVW-70P and BVW-75P), the BVW-40P remained in service at many European and international facilities well into the 1990s.
