JVC HR-S4800U
Description
The JVC HR-S4800U is a mid-range NTSC Super VHS videocassette recorder for the North American market, sold during JVC's S-VHS ET era in the late 1990s. Its headline feature is S-VHS ET, which records true S-VHS resolution onto inexpensive standard VHS tape. Editing-oriented touches include a flying erase head, audio dub and insert edit, and a front-panel S-Video input for camcorder work, alongside Hi-Fi stereo audio with an MTS broadcast decoder and VCR Plus+ timer programming with JVC's "Cable Eye" cable-box controller. It sits below JVC's TBC-equipped decks in the S-VHS range and has no time base correction of its own.
Time base correction
The HR-S4800U has no built-in time base corrector or frame synchronizer — the field is left to JVC's higher tiers. In JVC's S-VHS line, the digital TBC/DNR block appears in the HR-S7600U and above (HR-S7600/7800/7900 and the HR-S9400–9911 series); the 2000–5000-series machines, including this one, omit it.[1][2] For stable captures, pair it with an external line TBC/frame synchronizer, or use a TBC-equipped deck.
