Description

The Sony SL-C40 was the stereo version of the SL-C20 and SL-C30 models, built on the 711B chassis. It featured linear stereo sound and Beta noise reduction, making it the more capable sibling in the SL-C20/30/40 family. Produced in very small numbers, it was also available in unusual colours such as red and gold, making it rare today. On NTSC Beta Hi-Fi decks, Hi-Fi sound was recorded by the normal video heads, but PAL Beta Hi-Fi required additional heads, so PAL linear stereo machines like the SL-C40 continued to be sold alongside Hi-Fi models. The SL-C40 was a PAL-only model; the contemporary NTSC market did not have a direct equivalent, as American models had moved to Hi-Fi stereo by this time.
