Description

The Panasonic DMR-EH50 is a consumer DVD/HDD combo recorder released in 2005. It was Panasonic's flagship DVD recorder for that year, combining an 80GB hard disk drive with multi-format DVD recording.

In the video archival community, the DMR-EH50 is notable for its passthrough TBC performance. Community testing on the German Gleitz forum and VideoHelp determined that PAL variants of the EH50 (EB/EG/EP) use the same video processing chipset as the Panasonic DMR-ES10, placing it in the top tier of Panasonic DVD recorders for passthrough jitter correction alongside the ES10 and DMR-EH52.<ref name="videohelp-passthrough">VideoHelp Forum — "Panasonic DVD recorder passthrough settings" — Page 6 — Community comparison of Panasonic DVD recorder chipsets and passthrough TBC performance tiers.</ref>

The DMR-EH50 does not have HDMI output, so passthrough capture must be done via S-Video (recommended) or component video. For a detailed explanation of the passthrough TBC concept and recommended settings, see Panasonic DMR-ES10.

Known Issues

As with all Panasonic DVD/HDD recorders, the EH50 displays an intrusive "The HDD is going into power saving mode" on-screen message after 10–30 minutes of idle operation. This will be burned into any passthrough capture if not managed. Workarounds include inserting a blank disc, recording garbage to the HDD during capture, or waiting approximately 30 minutes after power-on before beginning capture.<ref name="videohelp-passthrough" />
