Component (YPbPr) is an analog video signal format that separates picture information into three channels: luminance (Y), blue color difference (Pb), and red color difference (Pr). In consumer electronics, "component video" almost universally refers to YPbPr, and it is the highest-quality analog video connection available on most consumer CRT televisions. YPbPr is carried over three separate 75Ω cables, typically using color-coded RCA connectors (green, blue, red) or BNC connectors in professional settings.

History

The mathematical foundations of YPbPr trace back to the development of color television in the 1950s, when engineers devised methods to encode color information as differences from a luminance signal — allowing backward compatibility with black-and-white receivers while conserving bandwidth.[1]

YPbPr as a distinct analog interface emerged in the professional broadcast world during the 1980s. The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) published SMPTE 240M, initially in 1987 and revised in 1995, defining analog high-definition component video parameters including 1080i YPbPr for studio production systems.[2]

For consumers, the Electronics Industries Alliance (EIA) developed the EIA-770 series of standards in the 1990s to formalize analog component video interfaces. EIA-770.2 covered standard-definition formats (480i, 576i), while EIA-770.3 (CEA-770.3) defined high-definition formats (480p, 720p, 1080i) for consumer equipment.[3]

Component video inputs appeared on consumer CRT televisions beginning in the late 1990s, initially on high-end widescreen sets. By the early 2000s, YPbPr became standard on mid-range and above CRT televisions, driven by the growth of DVD players and progressive-scan content. The format remained the primary high-quality analog connection through the HD CRT era until HDMI displaced it in the late 2000s.

Signal Characteristics

YPbPr encodes video as three simultaneous analog signals:

  • Y (luminance) — carries brightness information and synchronization (sync) data. The Y signal is equivalent to a monochrome video signal and is backward-compatible with black-and-white displays.[1]
  • Pb (blue difference) — carries the scaled difference between the blue channel and luminance (B' − Y'). Centered at 0V with equal positive and negative excursions.
  • Pr (red difference) — carries the scaled difference between the red channel and luminance (R' − Y'). Centered at 0V with equal positive and negative excursions.

Green is not transmitted directly; it is mathematically derived from Y, Pb, and Pr by the receiving display. This approach is more bandwidth-efficient than transmitting full RGB, as the human eye is more sensitive to luminance detail than chrominance detail, allowing the Pb and Pr channels to use reduced bandwidth without perceptible quality loss.

Unlike Composite (CVBS) and S-Video (Y/C), YPbPr keeps luminance and chrominance completely separated on individual cables, eliminating artifacts like dot crawl and cross-color interference entirely. YPbPr is also the only common consumer analog format (alongside RGB) capable of carrying progressive-scan and high-definition signals.

YPbPr is the analog equivalent of the digital YCbCr color space — the two are numerically equivalent, but YPbPr refers specifically to the analog domain while YCbCr is used in digital systems (including the internal processing of DVD and Blu-ray players).[1]

Connectors and Color Coding

In consumer equipment, YPbPr uses three RCA connectors with the following standard color coding:

Despite being colored green, blue, and red, the signals carried are not RGB — a frequent source of confusion. The colors are simply a convention to match connectors to their corresponding jacks.

Because YPbPr uses the same RCA connectors as composite video and audio, ordinary composite A/V cables can technically be used in place of dedicated component cables for short runs. However, dedicated 75Ω component cables with better shielding are recommended, especially for HD signals and longer distances.

In professional environments, BNC connectors are used instead of RCA for their superior impedance matching, secure locking mechanism, and better signal integrity over long cable runs.

Use on CRT Televisions

Component YPbPr inputs are found on CRT televisions from the late 1990s through the end of the CRT era (mid-2000s). Typical configurations include:

  • Standard-definition sets — many late-model 480i CRT TVs include at least one set of component inputs, which accept 480i and sometimes 480p signals. Even at 480i, component video provides a noticeably cleaner image than composite or S-Video due to the complete separation of luminance and chrominance.
  • HD CRT sets — widescreen HD CRT televisions (Sony, Toshiba, Samsung, JVC, etc.) typically have one or two sets of component inputs accepting 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i. These inputs are the primary way to connect HD sources like cable boxes, HD satellite receivers, and HD-capable game consoles to HD CRT sets.
  • Shared inputs — on some CRT sets, the component green (Y) jack doubles as a second composite video input, with an on-screen menu toggling between modes.

For the retro gaming community, component video is significant because it offers the best image quality available on consumer CRT televisions without requiring RGB modification. Game consoles with native YPbPr support include the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox, Xbox 360, Wii, and GameCube (via rare official cable or third-party solutions). Third-party transcoders like the HD Retrovision cables convert RGB signals from older consoles into YPbPr for use on component-equipped CRT sets.

In the hierarchy of common analog video connections on CRT televisions (worst to best):

  1. RF — modulated signal; lowest quality
  2. Composite (CVBS) — combined luminance and chrominance; dot crawl, cross-color
  3. S-Video (Y/C) — separated luminance and chrominance; cleaner than composite
  4. Component (YPbPr) — fully separated three-channel signal; near-RGB quality

In practice, YPbPr and RGB produce virtually identical image quality at standard-definition resolutions. The main advantage of YPbPr over RGB in the consumer space is its widespread availability on North American and Japanese CRT televisions (which rarely have RGB inputs outside of professional monitors), and its ability to carry progressive-scan and HD signals.
