Mini-DIN-4 is a 4-pin circular connector from the Mini-DIN connector family, most commonly associated with S-Video connections. It is the standard connector for carrying separate luminance (Y) and chrominance (C) video signals on consumer electronics including CRT televisions, VCRs, DVD players, game consoles, and computer graphics cards. The connector measures 9.5 mm in diameter and uses a keyed design that prevents mating with other Mini-DIN pin configurations.

History

The Mini-DIN connector family was developed as a smaller alternative to the original 13.2 mm DIN connectors standardized by the Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN), the German standards body. Mini-DIN connectors are specified in IEC 61076-4-106 and come in seven standard patterns with three to nine pins, each keyed so that different pin counts cannot be cross-mated.[1]

The 4-pin Mini-DIN variant gained widespread adoption in the late 1980s when JVC selected it as the standard connector for S-Video connections alongside the introduction of the S-VHS format in 1987. The same physical connector was also used for the Apple Desktop Bus (ADB) on Macintosh computers starting with the Apple IIGS in 1986, and the two cable types are physically interchangeable (though they carry completely different signals).[1]

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, the Mini-DIN-4 connector became ubiquitous on consumer A/V equipment as S-Video support spread to televisions, DVD players, satellite receivers, camcorders, and video game consoles.

Design

The Mini-DIN-4 connector has a 9.5 mm diameter cylindrical metal shell with a plastic keying tab that ensures correct orientation and prevents insertion into sockets of other Mini-DIN configurations. The four pins are arranged in a square pattern, with each signal pin (Y and C) paired with its own dedicated ground pin.[2]

The pins are relatively thin and delicate compared to larger connectors like BNC or RCA. Bent pins are a common problem, particularly with frequent insertion and removal, and can result in loss of color (if the C pin is affected) or complete signal loss. A bent pin can sometimes be straightened carefully, but risks breaking off entirely.[2]

Variants

While the standard 4-pin Mini-DIN is by far the most common S-Video connector, several non-standard variants exist:

  • 7-pin Mini-DIN — used on many PC graphics cards and some laptops. A 7-pin socket accepts a standard 4-pin S-Video plug, with the three extra pins variously carrying composite video, component video, or other signals depending on the manufacturer.[1]
  • 8-pin Mini-DIN — used on some ATI Radeon graphics cards
  • 9-pin Mini-DIN — used on graphics cards with both video input and output capability

These non-standard connectors lack standardized pinouts and vary between manufacturers, often requiring proprietary breakout cables or adapters.

Use on CRT Equipment

On CRT televisions, the Mini-DIN-4 socket is typically found on the rear panel (and sometimes on a front or side A/V panel), labeled "S-Video," "S-VHS," or simply "S." It provides a significant picture quality improvement over composite video by keeping the luminance and chrominance signals separate, eliminating dot crawl and cross-color artifacts.

The Mini-DIN-4 connector appears on CRT sets ranging from mid-range consumer televisions to professional monitors (though professional equipment more commonly uses dual BNC connectors for Y/C signals). It was a standard feature on most higher-end consumer CRT televisions manufactured from the early 1990s through the end of CRT production in the late 2000s.
