8-pin DIN 45326 is a round 8-pin connector conforming to the DIN 45326 standard. It was widely used on Japanese and European computers and AV equipment for carrying analog RGB video, composite video, and audio signals.

Variants

There are two main variants of this connector:

Variant Also Known As Pin Layout Description
DIN 45326 Type A DIN-8 270° "C" or horseshoe shape Pins 6,7 displaced at 45°
DIN 45326 Type B DIN-8 262° "U" shape Pins 6,7 displaced at 41°

The two types are not interchangeable due to different pin spacing. Type A is more common on Japanese equipment.

Common Applications

Analog RGB Output (Computers)

This connector was the standard RGB output on many Japanese computers including:

  • MSX, MSX2, MSX2+, and TurboR computers (Sony, Panasonic, Sanyo, Yamaha, etc.)
  • Fujitsu FM series
  • NEC PC-8800 series
  • Sharp X1 series

Multi-Input (AV Equipment)

Some monitors and TVs used this connector as a multi-purpose input carrying:

  • Composite video
  • Stereo audio
  • Control signals

For example, the Sony Profeel Pro series (KX-21HV1, KX-27HV1) uses an 8-pin DIN for their "Video 1" multi-input.

Pinouts

Pinouts vary significantly between manufacturers. The "official" MSX pinout (used by Sony, Yamaha, Panasonic, Mitsubishi Japan, Sanyo MSX2/2+) is:

Pin Signal Description
1 GND Ground
2 AUDIO Audio output
3 AV AV Control (+4.5V to +5V)
4 SYNC Composite sync (0.3Vpp) or CVBS
5 YS Fast switch (+3V or +5V)
6 R Red signal (0.7Vpp, 75Ω)
7 G Green signal (0.7Vpp, 75Ω)
8 B Blue signal (0.7Vpp, 75Ω)

Note: Other manufacturers (Hitachi, Daewoo, Philips, Canon, Sanyo MSX1, etc.) use completely different pinouts. Always verify the specific pinout for your equipment before making cables.

Comparison with EIAJ-8

Feature 8-pin DIN 45326 EIAJ-8
Shape Round Rectangular
Primary use Analog RGB output Digital RGB input
Signal type Analog (0.7Vpp) TTL (0V/5V)
Common on Computers (output) Monitors (input)
