The Sony PVM-9L3 is a 9-inch HR Trinitron professional video monitor introduced in 2003 as the entry point of Sony's PVM-L series, sharing its operating manual with the PVM-9L2, PVM-14L2 and PVM-20L2.[1] Sony's sales sheet gives a suggested list price of $1,400 and positions it for broadcast and production work in both field and studio.[2]
The tube is an HR Trinitron with P-22 phosphors, 9 inches nominal with an 8-inch viewable diagonal, resolving 450 TV lines at screen centre — where the otherwise identical PVM-9L2 uses a plain Trinitron tube good for 250 lines.[1][2] Colour temperature can be set to D65, D93 or a USER value adjustable from 5,000 K to 10,000 K.[1] Frequency response is 50 Hz to 6 MHz (0 dB/−3 dB), with switchable aperture compensation of 2–6 dB that does not operate on RGB sources.[1] Convergence error is 0.4 mm or less at centre and 0.5 mm or less at the periphery, linearity 4% or better on both axes, and raster size stability 1.0%.[1]
Features
The monitor detects NTSC and PAL automatically and can display in either 4:3 or 16:9.[2] A digital comb filter improves luminance/chrominance separation to cut cross-colour interference and colour noise.[2] Normal scan is 6% overscan — slightly tighter than the 7% of the 14- and 20-inch models — and a 5% underscan mode, blue-only mode and H/V delay are provided for setup work.[1][2] The on-screen menus can be displayed in seven languages: English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese.[1]
Standard inputs cover composite and Y/C only; unlike the PVM-14L2 and PVM-20L2 there are no analog RGB/component BNCs. Instead a rear option slot takes a single Sony BKM-series board to add SDI, SDTI-CP, DV or analog component input, with two OPTION AUDIO INPUT phono jacks alongside for the added sources.[1][2] Installing a fan-cooled BKM-150CP raises consumption from the standard 47 W to a maximum of 58 W.[1]
Field use is well provided for. In addition to the worldwide 100–240 V AC supply, the 9-inch models have a DC 12 V XLR input — rated 12 V DC, 4.2 A from a Listed Class 2 supply — and a rear battery attachment that accepts Sony BP-L60A/BP-L90A lithium-ion or BP-M50/BP-M100 nickel metal hydride packs.[1] A carrying handle is fitted, an optional ENG kit was offered, and the monitor racks up with the optional MB-520 mounting bracket.[1][2] An 8-pin modular parallel remote connector allows external control.[1]
