HDVS
HDVS (High Definition Video System) is Sony's proprietary analog high-definition video signal format, developed in the 1980s as part of Sony's early HDTV production ecosystem. The format carries five separate analog signals — G (green/luminance), B (blue), R/Y (red/color difference), Pb (blue difference), and Pr (red difference) — each on its own 75Ω BNC connector, for a total of six BNCs per connection (five signals plus a dedicated sync or ground line depending on configuration). HDVS equipment supports tri-level sync, bi-level sync, and HD/VD discrete sync inputs.
HDVS predates standardized analog HD component video interfaces (such as those defined by SMPTE 240M and later CEA-770.3) and was used exclusively in professional broadcast and production environments. It is not compatible with consumer Component (YPbPr) equipment.
Overview
Sony introduced HDVS in the mid-1980s as a closed ecosystem of HD cameras, VTRs (including the HDV-1000), and monitors intended for broadcast production and high-end presentation. The system was capable of 1125-line (1080i) and 1035-line HD signals and was used extensively in early HDTV demonstrations and productions worldwide before international HD standards were finalized.
HDVS monitors — including the Sony HDM-1230, Sony HDM-1730, Sony HDM-2830, and Sony HDM-3830 — accept the HDVS signal via BNC × 6 with loop-through, allowing daisy-chaining of multiple monitors from a single source. The loop-through architecture is a hallmark of professional broadcast monitor design.
Signal Format
The HDVS signal architecture reflects broadcast engineering practice of the era, providing both RGB-domain signals (G, B, R) and color-difference domain signals (R/Y, Pb, Pr) simultaneously on separate BNC connectors, with the receiving monitor selecting the appropriate input mode via its front-panel controls.
