S/PDIF (coaxial)
S/PDIF (coaxial) is a digital audio interconnect that carries the S/PDIF (Sony/Philips Digital Interface) signal over a 75 Ω coaxial cable terminated with RCA connectors. Standardized as IEC 60958 Type II (unbalanced), it is the electrical variant of the S/PDIF protocol and the most common digital audio output found on late-model CRT televisions, DVD players, CD players, and game consoles from the late 1990s onward.
History
S/PDIF was jointly developed by Sony and Philips in the early 1980s as a consumer-grade digital audio interface, designed alongside the Compact Disc standard. It was derived from the professional AES3 (AES/EBU) standard, sharing the same data-link layer protocol but using cheaper unbalanced cabling and RCA connectors instead of balanced 110 Ω twisted-pair with XLR connectors. The original standard was published as IEC 958 and redesignated IEC 60958 in 1998.
The coaxial electrical variant was the first physical implementation of S/PDIF, appearing on early CD players in the mid-1980s. It offered a straightforward upgrade path for consumers already familiar with RCA cables from analog audio connections. The optical variant (TOSLINK) was developed concurrently by Toshiba and offered an alternative physical layer.
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, coaxial S/PDIF became a standard feature on higher-end consumer electronics. Its role expanded beyond CD audio when the IEC 61937 standard defined a method for carrying compressed multichannel audio (Dolby Digital, DTS) over the S/PDIF data stream, enabling 5.1 surround sound connections from DVD players and digital television receivers to AV receivers.

The S/PDIF data stream consists of 192-frame blocks, with each frame containing two 32-bit sub-frames (one per channel). Each sub-frame carries up to 24 bits of audio data along with validity, user data, channel status, and parity bits. The biphase mark encoding is self-clocking — the receiver extracts timing from transitions in the data stream rather than from a separate clock signal.
The coaxial connection has several technical advantages over the optical (TOSLINK) variant: wider bandwidth allows support for higher sample rates, the electrical signal suffers less from jitter-inducing bandwidth limitations, and cable runs can be longer. However, the electrical connection is susceptible to ground loops and electromagnetic interference, which the optically isolated TOSLINK avoids.

Use on CRT Equipment
Coaxial S/PDIF digital audio outputs appeared on CRT televisions starting in the late 1990s, primarily on mid-range to high-end models with built-in ATSC digital tuners or DVD players. The digital output allowed these sets to pass Dolby Digital 5.1 audio from broadcast or disc sources to an external AV receiver — a capability that the television's own speakers could not reproduce.

- CRT televisions with ATSC tuners — Many HD-capable CRT sets from the early 2000s included a coaxial digital audio output to pass through Dolby Digital audio from over-the-air digital broadcasts. This was particularly important because these sets typically had only stereo speakers.

- Game consoles — The PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Xbox 360 provided coaxial or optical S/PDIF outputs for digital surround sound. The PS2's digital output was commonly connected to AV receivers in CRT-based gaming setups.
For retro gaming and home theater setups using CRT televisions, the coaxial S/PDIF output remains valuable for routing digital surround sound to an external receiver while the CRT handles video via component or composite connections.
