RF (Belling-Lee) is a 75Ω coaxial push-on RF connector used as the standard television aerial connector in Europe, the United Kingdom, Australia, and parts of Southeast Asia. Also widely known as the PAL connector, IEC connector, or simply an aerial plug, it is one of the oldest coaxial connector designs still in common use, having been invented in the 1920s. On CRT televisions in regions where it is standard, the Belling-Lee connector serves the same role as the F-type connector does in North America — providing the primary antenna and cable TV input.

History

The Belling-Lee connector was invented at Belling & Lee Ltd in Enfield, United Kingdom, around 1922, coinciding with the first BBC radio broadcasts.[1][2] It was originally designed for medium-frequency AM broadcast reception, where precise impedance matching was less critical.

As television broadcasting developed across Europe in the postwar era, the connector was adopted for VHF and UHF television antenna connections. Its adoption accelerated in the 1960s alongside the rollout of the PAL television broadcasting standard beginning in 1967, which is why the connector became widely known as the "PAL connector" in many European countries — particularly Germany and Italy.[3]

The connector was formalized under British Standard BS 3041 in the 1950s for television aerial feeders, and was later standardized internationally as IEC 61169-2, designated as a "radio-frequency coaxial connector of type 9,52."[1]

Design

The Belling-Lee connector uses a simple push-on friction-fit coupling mechanism (no threading), making it easy to connect and disconnect without tools. The male plug has a central conductor pin (2.35 mm diameter) enclosed within a cylindrical outer shell measuring 9.525 mm (3/8") in diameter. The female jack has a corresponding receptacle that accepts the pin, with the outer shell providing the ground connection.[3]

The convention for television signals is that the source (antenna, wall outlet, or signal amplifier) has a male connector, and the receiver (television set) has a female connector. For FM radio signals, this convention is reversed.[1]

Unlike the threaded F-type connector, the Belling-Lee connector relies entirely on friction for retention. While this makes connection quick and simple, it also means the connector can be dislodged more easily by cable movement. Screw-coupled variants exist but are less common.[3]

One practical advantage of the Belling-Lee system is that cables typically have a male plug on one end and a female socket on the other, allowing cables to be extended end-to-end without a separate barrel coupler — unlike F-type cables, which have male plugs on both ends and require a female-to-female coupler for extension.

Regional Usage

The Belling-Lee connector is the dominant television antenna connector in:

  • United Kingdom and Ireland — standard for all terrestrial TV and FM/DAB radio connections
  • Germany, Italy, and most of continental Europe — commonly called the "PAL connector"
  • Australia and New Zealand — standard for terrestrial antenna connections
  • Parts of Southeast Asia — used alongside other connector types

In North America, the Belling-Lee connector is rare. The F-type connector is the standard for terrestrial antenna, cable TV, and satellite connections. However, some consumer electronics sold internationally — particularly FM radio tuners and AV receivers — may include a Belling-Lee jack for antenna connection, which is occasionally encountered by North American users unfamiliar with the connector type.

Use on CRT Televisions

On CRT televisions sold in regions where the Belling-Lee connector is standard, it serves as the primary antenna input — equivalent to the F-type jack on North American sets. The female Belling-Lee socket is typically found on the rear panel, labeled "ANT," "AERIAL," or with an antenna symbol.

Many European CRT televisions use the Belling-Lee connector as their only RF input, with additional A/V connectivity provided by SCART connectors (which carry composite, S-Video, or RGB signals directly without RF modulation).

Some European CRT sets feature separate Belling-Lee jacks for VHF and UHF bands, similar to the separate VHF (F-type) and UHF (300Ω twin-lead) inputs found on older North American sets.

For connecting North American F-type equipment (such as game console RF adapters or NTSC VCRs) to a European CRT with a Belling-Lee input, adapters between the two connector types are readily available.
