The IBM 8513 is a 12-inch analog VGA colour display sold with the IBM Personal System/2 range. IBM describes it as a non-interlaced, "infinite colour", direct-drive analog display with externally selected vertical modes, fitted with a power switch, power-on indicator, brightness and contrast controls and a detachable tilt-and-swivel stand.[1]
The cathode ray tube measures 305 mm (12 in.) and carries type P-22 phosphor behind an etched, non-reflective dark faceplate; the data area is adjusted at service to 207 × 155 mm.[1] Video input is 75-ohm direct-drive analog at 0.0–0.7 V DC on a captive 1.8 m signal cable terminating in a 15-pin D-shell connector, and the display degausses automatically.[1]
Timing is fixed rather than multisync: the horizontal deflection rate is 31.5 kHz ±0.5 kHz with 5.7 µs of blanking, and the vertical rate runs from 50 to 70 Hz — restricted to 50–60 Hz in 480-line mode — with 0.88 ms of vertical blanking.[1]
Features
Rather than being told the mode over a data channel, the 8513 watches the polarity of the sync pulses coming from the video controller and selects the scan-line count from them: negative horizontal with positive vertical gives 350 data lines (362 including border), positive/negative gives 400 (414), and positive/positive gives 480 (496). The remaining combination is reserved.[1] Pins 11 and 12 of the connector carry Monitor Sense lines, grounded and open respectively, by which the system unit identifies the display.[1] A built-in self-test puts up a white-screen test pattern when the display is disconnected from the system unit.[1]
Four models were built, differing in supply voltage and magnetic shielding: Model 001 is the low-voltage version accepting 90–137 V AC, Models 002 and 003 are the high-voltage versions for the northern and southern hemispheres accepting 180–265 V AC, and Model 102 is a high-voltage, very-low-magnetic-field version for the northern hemisphere.[1] Operating temperature range is 15 to 33 °C and the display weighs 12 kg.[1]
