Serial Digital Interface (SDI) is a family of digital video interfaces standardized by SMPTE (the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) for professional broadcast and video production equipment. SDI transmits uncompressed digital video and embedded digital audio over 75Ω coaxial cable using BNC connectors. First standardized in 1989, SDI has been the backbone of professional television production and broadcast infrastructure, and is the standard digital input found on high-end broadcast CRT monitors.[1]

History

SDI emerged from the need to move uncompressed digital video between professional broadcast equipment without the signal degradation inherent in analog connections. SMPTE first published the standard-definition SDI specification (SMPTE 259M) in 1989, defining a 270 Mbit/s serial interface for standard-definition video. This allowed digital video to be routed through broadcast facilities using the same 75Ω coaxial cable and BNC connectors already in widespread use for analog video, simplifying the transition to digital production workflows.[1]

As high-definition television production grew in the late 1990s, SMPTE extended the interface with HD-SDI (SMPTE 292M, published 1998), operating at 1.485 Gbit/s to support 720p and 1080i formats. Subsequent standards have continued to increase bandwidth to accommodate higher resolutions, frame rates, and color depths.

The 270 Mbit/s SD-SDI rate is by far the most commonly encountered in CRT-era broadcast equipment. The less common 143 and 177 Mbit/s rates defined in SMPTE 259M were intended for digitally encoded composite NTSC and PAL signals and are now considered obsolete.[2]

SDI uses NRZI (Non-Return-to-Zero Inverted) encoding with a scrambling polynomial to ensure sufficient signal transitions for reliable clock recovery. The data stream includes embedded synchronization words (timing reference signals, or TRS) that mark the start of each video line and field, as well as ancillary data spaces in the horizontal and vertical blanking intervals for carrying embedded audio, timecode, and other metadata.[1]

Unlike consumer digital interfaces such as HDMI and DVI-D, SDI does not include any form of content protection (HDCP), nor does it include a return channel for display identification (EDID/DDC). SDI is a unidirectional, point-to-point (or point-to-multipoint via distribution amplifiers) interface designed for the controlled environment of a broadcast facility.

Use on CRT Equipment

Broadcast CRT Monitors

SDI inputs are standard on broadcast-grade CRT monitors used in television production, post-production, and master control rooms. These monitors include:

  • Sony BVM series — the BVM-D and BVM-A series broadcast monitors feature SD-SDI and HD-SDI inputs via BNC, alongside analog inputs. The BVM-D20F1U, BVM-D24E1WU, and BVM-A20F1U are examples of monitors with SDI capability that are prized in the retro gaming community.
  • Sony BVM-D series — later D-series models (D20, D24, D32) include both SD-SDI (SMPTE 259M) and HD-SDI (SMPTE 292M) on optional input boards.
  • Ikegami HTM series — broadcast reference monitors with SDI input boards.
  • JVC professional monitors — certain JVC broadcast monitors include SDI input options.

On these monitors, the SDI input signal is decoded internally to the monitor's native analog driving signals for the CRT. The monitor's internal processing handles color space conversion (YCbCr to RGB), de-embedding of audio, and timing extraction.

Broadcast Infrastructure

SDI is the standard interconnect within television broadcast facilities, carrying signals between cameras, switchers, frame synchronizers, graphics systems, video servers, and monitoring equipment. CRT monitors in these environments receive SDI feeds for quality control, color grading, and transmission monitoring. The ability to carry embedded audio and timecode alongside video in a single cable simplifies facility wiring.

Relevance to CRT Enthusiasts

SDI is primarily relevant to CRT enthusiasts who acquire broadcast-grade monitors (particularly Sony BVM models) for retro gaming or display use. To use these monitors with consumer equipment or game consoles, the source signal must be converted to SDI, typically using an external converter box. Several solutions exist:

  • HDMI-to-SDI converters — Blackmagic Design, AJA, and other broadcast equipment manufacturers produce inexpensive HDMI-to-SDI converter boxes that can feed modern digital sources into SDI-equipped CRT monitors.
  • Analog-to-SDI converters — for converting composite, S-Video, or component signals to SDI for input to broadcast monitors that lack analog inputs or have limited analog input options.

Some CRT enthusiasts prefer SDI inputs on BVM monitors because the digital signal path avoids analog signal degradation over cable runs, though for typical short-distance retro gaming setups, the difference compared to high-quality analog connections is negligible.
