The Sony PVM-14L5 is a 14-inch multiformat HR Trinitron professional video monitor, the smaller of a pair with the 20-inch PVM-20L5 with which it shares an operating manual and a service manual. US and Canadian sets carry chassis number SCC-G61K-A.

The picture tube is an HR (High Resolution) Trinitron using SMPTE-C standard luminescent material, resolving more than 800 TV lines at the centre of the screen in 4:3 and 600 TV lines in 16:9. Colour temperature can be set to D65, D93 or a USER preset adjustable between 5,000 K and 10,000 K. Convergence error is specified at 0.4 mm or less in the centre and 0.5 mm or less at the periphery, with linearity of 4% or better on both axes and raster size stability of 1.0%.

Frequency response is 50 Hz to 10 MHz (0 dB/−3 dB) on 575/50i and 480/60i component inputs and 48 Hz to 24 MHz for all other formats and for RGB. Aperture compensation is switchable between off (0 dB) and 2–6 dB, centred at 5 MHz for standard-definition inputs and 16 MHz otherwise; it does not operate on RGB sources.

Features

The 14L5 is a multiformat monitor rather than a fixed 15 kHz set: it locks to any horizontal frequency between 15 kHz and 45 kHz, covering the conventional NTSC and PAL colour systems plus 480/60i, 575/50i, 480/60P, 576/50P, 1080/48i, 1080/50i, 1035/60i, 1080/60i and 720/60P, and switches between 4:3 and 16:9 display. The appropriate colour system is selected automatically between NTSC and PAL, and an auto chroma phase function trims the decoder's chroma and phase.

A comb filter engages on NTSC composite for cleaner Y/C separation, and a beam-current feedback circuit holds white balance stable. The CRT is degaussed automatically at power-on — with a user-settable delay in the menu — and manually with a front-panel DEGAUSS button, which is inhibited while the on-screen menu is displayed.

Monitoring aids comprise a 5% underscan mode, an H/V delay mode and a blue-only mode. In underscan, faint RGB scanning lines may appear along the top edge; these come from an internal test signal rather than the source. A built-in Caption Vision (closed caption) decoder superimposes English subtitles when caption data is present. Settings can be locked against tampering through the KEY PROTECT menu.

An input option slot in the rear panel accepts Sony BKM-series adaptor boards — among them the BKM-129X, BKM-142HD, BKM-150CP and BKM-155DV — to add input formats; the fan-cooled boards raise standard power consumption from 110 W to as much as 120 W. Remote control is available both as a serial D-sub 9-pin loop-through and as an 8-pin modular parallel remote whose pins can be assigned in the Remote menu to input selection, red and green tally, external sync, underscan and 16:9 aspect. The monitor mounts in an EIA 19-inch rack with the optional MB-521 bracket or SLR-104 slide rail.
