Description

The Sony PCM-F1 was a portable digital audio processor and one of the most significant audio products of the 1980s. Released in 1981, it was the first portable digital audio recording system when paired with the SL-F1 Betamax VCR. It converts analog audio to PCM digital format encoded as a pseudo-video signal for recording onto Betamax or VHS tape. Uniquely, the PCM-F1 offered switchable 14-bit and 16-bit quantization — the 14-bit EIAJ standard mode used leftover bits for error correction, while 16-bit mode maximized dynamic range. The PCM-F1 won the Japanese Gold Prize in 1982 and was widely adopted by professional recording engineers for its exceptional sound quality at a fraction of the cost of professional digital systems. Nakamichi rebadged it as the DMP-100 with improved analog components. The build quality was exceptional, with units frequently found in working order decades later.
