The TOSLINK system converts the S/PDIF biphase mark coded signal into light pulses using a red LED transmitter, sends them through a plastic optical fiber, and converts them back to electrical signals at the receiving end using a photodiode. The data format is identical to coaxial S/PDIF — 192-frame blocks with two 32-bit sub-frames per frame, carrying up to 24 bits of audio data per channel.
